Congratulations! Prof. Sanwen Huang has been elected as Foreign Members of UK's Royal Society
The election to the Fellowship of the Royal Society recognizes exceptional contributions to scientific research by individuals who are leaders in their respective fields. In 2025, the Royal Society welcomed 95 newly elected Fellows.
Sir Adrian Smith, President of the Royal Society, remarked: "The achievements of our new Fellows exemplify the pinnacle of scientific exploration—from fundamental discoveries to research with real-world impact across health, technology, and policy. Their work addresses global health challenges and redefines the potential of artificial intelligence for human civilization, demonstrating the power of curiosity-driven innovation."
Citation for Huang Sanwen’s Election: "He has made groundbreaking contributions to plant genomics and genome-guided crop breeding. His team pioneered the development of the first highly homozygous potato inbred lines and hybrid potatoes through genomic design, transforming potatoes from clonally propagated tetraploid crops into seed-propagated diploid crops. This breakthrough has shifted potato breeding from a slow, non-cumulative process to a rapid, iterative model, establishing a new paradigm for the genetic improvement of clonally propagated crops."
Prior Honors & Recognitions:Huang Sanwen was previously elected as an Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (2023) for his contributions to plant genomics and crop breeding. His accolades include:
Zhou Guangzhao Foundation Prize for Basic Sciences (2016)
Second Prize of China's State Natural Science Award (First Completer, 2018)
Ho Leung Ho Lee Prize for Scientific and Technological Progress (2018)
National Award for Innovation Excellence (2020)
TWAS Prize in Agricultural, Nutritional, and Food Sciences (2024)
His election as a Fellow of the Royal Society marks international recognition by one of the world’s most prestigious scientific academies.
