1.Maize Genetics and Breeding
With a collection of thousands of elite breeding germplasm lines, we started to developed multiple breeding populations for different market segments, whole genome genotyping of all the germplasm, resequencing of major lines. 3000-5000 DH lines are developed each year, with 20% going to TC for field tests and the rest 80% are evaluated based on GS. All DH lines are genotyped by 50K gene chips or simplified resequencing. QTL mapping via GWAS was conducted for agronomic and yield traits annually and major QTL heatmap will be used for fine mapping and map-based cloning. Conventional breeding process is combined and facilitated with molecular breeding tools with aims of product development as well as major gene identification.
2.Molecular basis of heterosis
We developed a unique approach to study the molecular basis of heterosis. In stead of conventionally applied population genetics approach, we used molecular approach to direct detect single gene and/or multiple gene interactions in a controlled genetic background. Multi-omics techniques are used to measure gene activities at different level. Arabidopsis and maize are major materials for this study.
