Our Research

Objectives

Introduction

Xiang's Lab focused on characterization of genes controlling seed vigor (dormancy, longevity, and germination ability) under stress conditionsin rice and Arabidopsis through genomics, genetics, molecular biology approaches, and their applications for direct seeding rice breeding. The research group has 15 personnel, including 1 PI , 1 Assistant Researcher, 2 Postdoctoral fellows, 1 PhD student, 5 MSc students, 5Support and Management Staffs.

Research Areas

Jianlong Xu
Xu’s lab devotes to map and mine the favorable genes of green traits affecting rice quality, yield, Lodging resistance, biotic and abiotic resistance, with high throughput SNP genotypes of trait-specific introgression lines (ILs) and re-sequencing germplasms. Xu’s lab is engaged in creating molecular designing and pyramiding breeding technical system of multiple complex traits based on phenotype of the ILs and genotype of the target trait and developing green super rice through the whole genome selection combined with conventional breeding techniques. The research group has 12 personnel, including 1 PI, 1 associate researcher, 4 assistant researchers, 2 post-docs, 4 MSc students.
Associate researcher
Kai ChenKai Chen, Senior Agronomist/Associate Researcher, PhD. He has been engaged in rice genome-wide molecular design breeding. He mainly uses molecular methods to breed for the aggregation of several excellent genes such as disease resistance, stress resistance, and high quality, as well as the targeted improvement of disease resistance, quality and other traits in two sterile lines of rice; he combines whole-genome molecular breeding with conventional breeding to improve the efficiency of rice breeding, and selects and breeds new varieties of rice suitable for the southern rice region.
Postdoc
Guojuan Xu Guojuan Xu, postdoc researcher. Her research focuses on the molecular mechanism of rice-pathogen interaction and rice resistance; project leader of  the youth project of National Natural Science Foundation of China, the youth project of Guangdong Regional Joint Fund for Basic and Applied Basic Research, and the general project of Postdoctoral Science Foundation. Published papers as the first author (including co-authors) in Science Advances, PNAS, and Trends in Plant Science. Laiyuan Zhai Laiyuan Zhai,Postdoc and Assistant professor, . His main research is on gene cloning and gene function research of rice bundle related traits, contributing to improving yield and quality of rice. He participated in a National Natural Science Foundation project, leading  a postdoctoral science Foundation project, and was selected for the  Young Talent Lift Project 2023-2025 of the Beijing Science and Technology Association.  He has published 13 academic papers in international a...
